Art & expo - Thu 11 January 2024
WORM Rotterdam
Start → 17:00
End → 22:00

Invisible Fungi by Ringailė Demšytė is a virtual reality (VR) experience designed to showcase the integral yet often unnoticed role of fungi in our lives, especially during times of ecological degradation.

This project builds upon the artist’s previous work, the Visual Fungi Language project which explores the speculative visual language of mushrooms by interpreting their electrical spiking activity as a potential means of facilitating communication between humans and nonhumans.

Invisible Fungi utilizes tech experimentation & raw organic materials to provide visitors with an opportunity to immerse themselves in the unseen world of mycelium. The project aims to cultivate a heightened sense of empathy towards the natural environment and promote a greater understanding of the intricate role mushrooms play in our ecosystem.

Invisible Fungi won two awards during the Immersive Tech Week 2023 in Rotterdam: Most Impactful Project and Best Immersive Application.

VR EXPERIENCE
The VR experience takes around 3 min. You will receive a headset via which you can explore the work.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Ringailė Demšytė (born 1998) is a Lithuanian visual artist who has been fascinated by mushrooms since a young age. Her parents affectionately called her "mushroom," and her childhood was filled with fairytales and drawings centered around them. Recently, as Ringailė paid tribute to her childhood and continued to explore the world of fungi through research-based projects, fungi became an inseparable and essential part of her artistic practice.

As someone passionate about visual communication, Ringailė strives to challenge her artistic practice by questioning the boundaries between real and fictitious, using digital tools and printed mediums. In addition, she explores (fictional) languages and alternative sounds through visual experimentation.

In 2023, Demšytė completed her BA in Design at Willem de Kooning Academy with Honors and she has already exhibited throughout the Netherlands and abroad (Warsaw, PL; New York, US; Gent, BE).
