**Totally Fucked Up
by Gregg Araki
USA, 1993, 78 min., English **

Gregg Araki’s third feature film chronicles the dysfunctional lives of six gay adolescents who have formed a family unit and grapple with internal conflicts and external challenges imposed by a homophobic society. Araki classified it as a rag-tag story of the fag-and-dyke teen underground….a kinda cross between avant-garde experimental cinema and a queer John Hughes flick. Premiering at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival, it marks the first installment of Araki’s Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy, a significant contribution to the New Queer Cinema genre.

This is the sixth screening in our Os Mutantes series, inspired by Theresa Villaverde’s film of the same name. In it, we use the concept of the mutant as a way to reframe growing up as a transformative process, rather than the typical "coming of age" narrative that often feels focused on individual success and self-improvement. The series includes films by Catharine Breillat, Lucrecia Martel, Wang Bing, and many others.

Catch the remaining two parts of the Trilogy in April at WORM, courtesy of our friends at CULT film.

Cineville valid at the door!
