The Gleaners and I
by Agnès Varda
France, 82 min. 2000, French and English with English subtitles

In every history book there’s a little story about the hunters and gatherers of the past. The hunters were out killing, while the gatherers were picking, plucking, carrying, and collecting — acts that don’t involve murder. It’s strange to read about gatherers as if they’re a thing from the past: aren’t we all, as humans, as animals, gathering, still? Not just food or furniture, but stories: we collect what we see, hear, read, experience through literature, through cinema, in our consciousness. Without stories, we’d have no understanding of history, of community, of the self.

To remind us of our ever-present human need for gathering, PEMBE presents the film program CARRIER BAG OF CINEMA in WORM on the 8th of May, screening Agnès Varda’s The Gleaners and I. After the film there’s a talk with community kitchen Het Rode Keukentje who will make soup with gleaned veggies from the Blaak market the day before, and invite a fellow gleaner to explain why + how we could save more food.

We will also be making a 3D review zine of the film and read snippets of Ursula K. Le Guin’s Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction together.
