Does mass fill the image in this film with meaning? Or is it a vacuum that obliterates the image and transforms the film?
Rotterdam-based visual artist Marco Douma creates digitally processed images from charcoal drawings, creating what he calls an "indefinable space." Thus, with slowed-down abstract music by co-director Roel Meelkop.
The Spectacular offers a reflection on the coincidence of time and space.

Red Dust

A couple of times a year, the sky turns red in France. Sand dust from the Sahara is passed through a difference in air pressure from North Africa to Southern Europe. This dust, a time capsule containing cesium-137 from the French nuclear tests in Algeria, covers everything.
The film exposes the impact of a war that was never fought. A French veteran and archeology students share and speculate on what will be remembered and what will be hidden under the sand forever.

A Cactus, A Ladder and a Boot

This short film accompanies three young Mexican-American women as they play a game of “Heads Up” in the shadow of the border wall. Using cards from the Mexican game “Lotería”, they take turns guessing the card placed on their forehead.
Playing with Mexican stereotypes and expressions, these cards take on a more symbolic meaning juxtaposed with images of the border wall on a separate screen. The work speaks to the crossroads of mixed identity and the new iconography of the borderlands.

Trees of Rotterdam

The film portrays the greenest inhabitants of the city of Rotterdam. In a single, virtual shot we glide through the city, while listening to stories about its green giants – that incidentally outnumber the people.
Initially the artificiality of the imagery seems to contrast with the nature we see, though eventually, the two intertwine like stems – the city embraces the trees and the trees embrace the city.

Vult massa het beeld in deze film met betekenis? Of is het een vacuüm dat het beeld uitwist en de film transformeert? De Rotterdamse beeldend kunstenaar Marco Douma maakt digitaal bewerkte beelden van houtskooltekeningen en creëert daarmee wat hij een "ondefinieerbare ruimte" noemt.
Zo biedt The Spectacular met de vertraagde abstracte muziek van coregisseur Roel Meelkop, een reflectie op het samenvallen van tijd en ruimte.

Hoe kan gelaagdheid worden zowel getekend, geschilderd of digitaal geproduceerd als geïntegreerd en getimed?

Een paar keer per jaar kleurt de lucht in Frankrijk rood. Zandstof uit de Sahara wordt door een luchtdrukverschil van Noord-Afrika naar Zuid-Europa verplaatst. Dit stof, een tijdcapsule met cesium-137 van de Franse kernproeven in Algerije, bedekt alles.
De film legt de impact bloot van een oorlog die nooit is uitgevochten. Een Franse veteraan en archeologie-studenten speculeren over wat herinnerd zal worden en wat voor altijd verborgen zal blijven onder het zand.

Drie jonge Mexicaans-Amerikaanse vrouwen spelen ‘Heads Up’ in de schaduw van de grensmuur. Met behulp van kaarten uit het Mexicaanse spel "Lotería" raden ze om de beurt de kaart die op hun voorhoofd is geplaatst.
Spelend met Mexicaanse stereotypen en uitdrukkingen, worden de kaarten symbolen van de nieuwe iconografie van dit grensgebied.

De film is een portret van de stad Rotterdam en haar groenste inwoners: de bomen, waarvan er meer zijn dan mensen. In een enkel virtueel shot in monochroom vliegen we dwars door de stad en horen we verhalen over deze groene reuzen. Het kunstmatige van de beelden steekt schijnbaar af tegen de verbeelde natuur, maar verstrengelt daar uiteindelijk mee. Zoals de stad ook haar bomen omarmt en andersom.
