Safe.Self.Sense. by David Verbeek and Yu He Lin, commissioned by IFFR, is a 3-channel video installation and separate performance. Through dance, image and sound, the work explores how the pandemic has affected our perception of safety, identity and senses.

Safe.Self.Sense is a 3-channel video installation and live performance by David Verbeek and Yu He Lin, commissioned by IFFR. The work explores the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in relation to the themes, safety, identity and sense. The installation combines cinematography, modern dance and sound composition, with three screens which show parallel storylines depicting ‘Safe,’ ‘Self,’ and ‘Sense’.

The performance, which will only be staged for a few days, can be viewed afterwards as a video installation. This work is not a literal representation of the pandemic, but offers an abstract exploration of how this period shaped us collectively and the losses in the process.

Safe.Self.Sense was produced in Taiwan and marks a continued development in Verbeek’s practice as a visual artist. Supported in part by the Mondriaan Fund, this work was made possible through the Art Assignment Scheme and will be presented as a world premiere at IFFR 2025.
