Casta Diva is Eric de Kuyper’s regiedebuut en wellicht zijn meest experimentele werk; de invloed van Jean Genet, Visconti en Warhol is duidelijk voelbaar. Bij het uitkomen was de film in Nederland meteen een alom geprezen ‘underground classic’ om vervolgens snel in de vergetelheid te raken. In België werd de film bijna volledig genegeerd maar in Hyères (Frankrijk) won hij de Grand Prix op het Festival International du Jeune Cinéma. De film is een woordloze studie van het mannelijke bewegen, een verbeelding van (homo-)erotisch verlangens naar het mannelijk lichaam, af en toe vergezeld van populaire of operamuziek. De titel verwijst naar de beroemde aria uit Vincenzo Bellini’s opera Norma uit 1831.

De film wordt vertoond ter gelegenheid van het afscheid van Hugo Bongers als voorzitter van het bestuur van WORM. Hugo houdt een inleiding bij de film en over het werk van de Belgische schrijver, filmmaker, docent, wetenschapper en operaliefhebber Eric de Kuyper (1942). De Kuyper was tussen 1988 en 1992 adjunct-directeur van het Filmmuseum in Amsterdam (nu Eye) en schreef onder andere het boek De verbeelding van het mannelijk lichaam (1993, over wat wel en niet mocht in Hollywood) en enkele autobiografische romans.

De inleiding van Hugo Bongers is in het Nederlands, de film zelf heeft geen dialoog.

Casta Diva is Eric de Kuyper’s directorial debut and arguably his most experimental work; the influence of Jean Genet, Visconti and Warhol is palpable. Upon its release, the film was immediately a widely acclaimed underground classic in the Netherlands only to quickly fall into oblivion. In Belgium, the film was almost completely ignored but in Hyères, France, it won the Grand Prix at the Festival International du Jeune Cinéma. The film is a wordless study of male movement, a depiction of (gay) erotic desires for the male body, occasionally accompanied by popular or operatic music. The title refers to the famous aria from Vincenzo Bellini’s 1831 opera Norma.

The film is screened on the occasion of Hugo Bongers’ farewell as chairman of WORM’s board. Hugo will give an introduction to the film and about the work of Belgian writer, filmmaker, teacher, scientist and opera lover Eric de Kuyper (1942). De Kuyper was deputy director of the Filmmuseum in Amsterdam (now Eye) between 1988 and 1992 and wrote, among others, the book De verbeelding van het mannelijk lichaam (1993, about what was allowed and what was not allowed in Hollywood when it came to showing the male physique) and several autobiographical novels.
