On the occasion of the publication of the photo book GRIT. Truus de Groot in New York City, WORM presents a multimedia exhibition of the same name in S/ash Gallery (4- 20 November).

Musician, crackle-box player, and electro pioneer Truus de Groot (known for Nasmak and Plus Instruments, among others) has been working on an innovative and cross-genre oeuvre since the early 1980s. The exhibition and publication GRIT. Truus de Groot in New York City gives Truus de Groot a stage as a multidisciplinary artist for the first time.

Photo book and exhibition "GRIT. Truus de Groot in New York City" is published in a limited edition by SAGO Press, the new publishing house of author and artist Leonor Faber-Jonker. The photo book contains previously unpublished photographs that Truus de Groot made between 1981 and 1989 of her then hometown New York City. In S/ash Gallery these photographs are on view alongside (super-8) films made by Truus, soundscapes, documents, and objects from her personal archives.

The opening will be followed by a Live Performance of Plus Instruments performing with the original early 80’s backing tracks. Feat. Mathijs Burgler (Rats on Rafts) on drums & surprise guests.

ABOUT TRUUS DE GROOT
Truus de Groot is a musician, crackle-box player, and electro pioneer. Her musical career spans over 4 decades. Born in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, she debuted as a singer just at the beginning of the Punk craze in 1976. After a brief stint that introduced her to a touring style of life, with (ultimately) one of Netherland’s most famous Pop bands Doe Maar, she continued playing in a number of Dutch bands. Her direction took her into a more experimental phase. In 1979 she released her first E.P. and she teamed up with Michel Waisvisz, the inventor of the Crackle Synthesizer for numerous performances. During this time, she was also the lead singer of the popular Dutch new wave band Nasmak

After hundreds of performances in Europe, Truus decided to look for more challenges and moved to NYC in 1981. Since then she has worked with among others Lee Ranaldo (now in Sonic Youth), James Sclavunos ( Lydia Lunch, Sonic Youth, the Cramps, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds & Grinderman), Nick Cave, Mark Mothersbaugh, Katy Perry, Weird All Yankovich and Rafael Rozendaal.

NEDERLANDS
Ter gelegenheid van het verschijnen van het fotoboek GRIT. Truus de Groot in New York City presenteert WORM een gelijknamige multimediatentoonstelling in S/ash Gallery (3 t/m 20 november).

Muzikant, kraakdoosbespeler en elektropionier Truus de Groot (bekend van o.a. Nasmak en Plus Instruments) werkt al vanaf de vroege jaren 1980 aan een innovatief en genre-overschrijdend oeuvre. De tentoonstelling en publicatie GRIT. Truus de Groot in New York City geven Truus de Groot voor het eerst nadrukkelijk een podium als multidisciplinair kunstenaar.

GRIT. Truus de Groot in New York City verschijnt in gelimiteerde oplage bij SAGO Press, de nieuwe uitgeverij van schrijver en kunstenaar Leonor Faber-Jonker. In het fotoboek verschijnen niet eerder gepubliceerde foto’s die Truus de Groot tussen 1981 en 1989 maakte van haar woonplaats New York City. In S/ash Gallery zijn deze foto’s te zien naast (super-8)-films gemaakt door Truus, soundscapes, documenten en voorwerpen uit haar persoonlijke archief.

Na de opening van de tentoonstelling, speelt Truus een klassieke Plus Instruments-set in een nieuw jasje. Materiaal van platen ‘Februari-April ‘81’ en ‘Exile in Paradise’ voert ze uit met de originele analoge backing tracks, live drummer Mathijs Burgler (Rats on Rafts) en special guests.

OVER Truus de Groot
Truus de Groot is muzikant, cracklebox-speler en electro-pionier. Haar muzikale carrière omspant 4 decennia. Geboren in Eindhoven, Nederland, debuteerde ze als zangeres net aan het begin van de Punk rage in 1976. Na een korte periode die haar kennis liet maken met het leven op tour, met (uiteindelijk) een van Nederland’s meest bekende popbands Doe Maar, speelde ze nog in een aantal Nederlandse bands. Haar interesses brachten haar in een meer experimentele fase. In 1979 bracht ze haar eerste EP uit en ze werkte samen met Michel Waisvisz, de uitvinder van de Crackle Synthesizer, voor tal van optredens. In diezelfde tijd was ze zangeres van de populaire Nederlandse new wave band Nasmak.

Na honderden optredens in Europa besloot Truus meer uitdagingen te zoeken en verhuisde in 1981 naar NYC. Sindsdien werkte ze samen met onder meer Lee Ranaldo (nu in Sonic Youth), James Sclavunos (Lydia Lunch, Sonic Youth, the Cramps en nu met Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds & Grinderman), Nick Cave, Mark Mothersbaugh, Katy Perry, Weird All Yankovich en Rafael Rozendaal
