Conny Janssen Danst: NEXT

Met NEXT voegt Conny Janssen Danst een avontuurlijk project toe aan de activiteiten van het gezelschap. Het nieuwe initiatief biedt jaarlijks aan een talentvolle choreograaf de kans een compacte productie te creëren met de dansers van het gezelschap. NEXT is een voorstelling met stadse energie die op onverwachte locaties in Rotterdam opduikt.

Voor de primeur van NEXT gaat Antonin Comestaz de uitdaging aan om met zeven dansers nieuw werk te ontwikkelen en daarmee de stad in te trekken. De Franse choreograaf, gevestigd in Den Haag, staat bekend om de speelse en inventieve benadering in zijn werk. Hij hanteert een gedetailleerde bewegingstaal met invloeden uit folk, mime, breakdance, commerciële dans, ballet, hedendaagse dans en cartoons.

Antonin Comestaz over zijn nieuwe werk met de voorlopige titel "So far, so good.”:

*For this project, I worked with seven energetic dancers in their early 20s with a strong team spirit. Therefore, the central theme that immediately inspired me was "youth." I wanted to create a playground with a cheerful fraternity, a positive and energetic vibe, and a touch of foolishness that characterizes this period of life. I explore the camaraderie and mutual aid around physical games within the group but also zoom on individual relationships in duos and solos. In the creation process, I like to get inspired by the dancers and their personalities, which I want to highlight and give the audience the impression that they got to familiarise themselves with who the dancers are as humans.
Moreover, with the title "So far. so good." I want to touch on the duality that typifies youth between the carefree lightness of living in the present and the hopes and dreams for a bright future.

For this piece, I work with a soundtrack comprising contrasting elements of traditional and tribal instruments (Alpes horns and didgeridoo) and modern electronic music (techno). Each with its color, these music genres celebrate a sense of communion and tribe belonging. Sometimes also, I use silence. This way, the dancers produce the rhythms, phrasing, and synchronicity solely through their movements, reinforcing their teamwork skills without the support of a sound grid.*
