CANNIBAL POETICS
This program of short films aims to devour reality through the prism of fiction, seeking to expose connections between the practice of writing and filming the real with the colonialist apparatus, and further subverting it through queer parody.

Thematically departing from Bernardo Zanotta’s upcoming film WILD FRUITS, the evening will boast landscapes as diverse as Chick Strand’s immersive sensorial universe, Jack Smith’s DIY technicolor palette, and Thiago Antunes’ work-in-progress experimental take on the experience of migration. A Q&A with Bernardo Zanotta and Thiago Antunes will follow.

FAKE FRUIT FACTORY
Chick Strand, 1986, 22min, 16mm
The film documents young women making artificial fruits and vegetables in a small factory in Mexico with a gringo boss and his Mexican wife (the latter owning the factory). The main focuses are the color, music, and movement involved and the constant gossip about what the women think of men.

JUNGLE ISLAND
Jack Smith, 1967, 22min, 16mm
A tropical island fantasy featuring Mario Montez, from the DIY technicolor palette of American revolutionary queer auteur, Jack Smith.

WILD FRUITS (excerpt)
Bernardo Zanotta, 2024, 14min, digital file
16th century: After a period overseas in the Antarctic France, Jean Aurand finds refuge as a servant in the house of French philosopher Michel de Montaigne, where a series of fantastical events change the lives of these two men forever.

CROC
Thiago Antunes, 2023, 17min, digital file
A meeting between a newcomer and an authority is uncovered by an unreliable narrator, who seems to be eating while speaking. Paralleling language learning with shape-shifting, the film aims to bring light to the power exchange between host and guest in the context of the adaptation process of migrants from Global South countries to Europe.
