Back to the Future Festival SPECTRAL – Opening

Back to the Future #3 is a 2-day festival that is all about analogue moving images and optical sound; a celebration of the ‘real’ film medium with an international programme of audio-visual performances, films, lectures, installations and radio programmes.

This year we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 16mm (celluloid) film format. In 1923 Eastman Kodak launched the 16mm as a cheaper alternative to the industrial 35mm format, and, in the following decades, it was taken up as the film format of choice for experimental artistic film.

Within our Back to the Future festival, we want to share the rich history of 16mm as an experimental artistic (DIY) medium. With this medium, artists and filmmakers worldwide have written an inspiring parallel film history that continues nowadays. Also the (mostly) young makers at the Filmwerkplaats find the tactility, creative possibilities and beauty of 16mm film a relief from the current digital age, following the path of its avant-garde tradition, usually referred to as ‘experimental film’ for lack of a better name. In fact, ‘real’ film has never been lost.

The third edition of Back to the Future festival will take place during the weekend of September 29-30 / 1 October with an international programme of audio-visual performances, films, lectures, radio podcasts and installations.
