JANPIER BRANDS VERLAAT WORM

WORM, Rotterdam, 6 September, 2022.

Algemeen directeur Janpier Brands zal WORM op 1 november 2022 verlaten. Hij zal  namens Codarts en Willem de Kooning Academie (Hogeschool Rotterdam) meewerken aan de Bauhaus Cultuur&Campus op Rotterdam Zuid.

Janpier Brands is sinds februari 2017 directeur van WORM. Onder zijn leiding ontwikkelde WORM zich tot een open kunstorganisatie, dat met tal van Rotterdamse initiatieven verbonden is. Vanuit WORM’s interesse in de ideeën van de medemens worden jaarlijks honderden producties in WORM gerealiseerd, waarop tienduizenden bezoekers afkomen. Daarnaast is er een groot en duurzaam internationaal netwerk ontwikkeld, waarin Rotterdamse cultuurmakers en kunstenaars circuleren. WORM’s bijzondere manier van werken is in 2021 onderkend met de toetreding tot de Rijks Basis Infrastructuur.

De Raad van Toezicht van WORM is trots op de ontwikkelingen die Janpier de afgelopen jaren heeft gerealiseerd. ‘We zullen Janpier enorm gaan missen in WORM, tegelijkertijd zien we dat hij bij uitstek een bijdrage aan Cultuur&Campus kan leveren van  wat de stad, haar inwoners en de kunstenaars van de toekomst nodig hebben. In WORM komt nu, geheel in lijn met de visie van Janpier, plek vrij voor de volgende generatie om de toekomst vorm te geven.’

Tina Rahimy, voorzitter Raad van Toezicht WORM: ‘De uitdagingen van WORM van afgelopen jaren waren niet gering. De culturele en maatschappelijke veranderingen in de stad Rotterdam, de jaren met beperkingen voor culturele sector wegens Corona maar ook de turbulente tijd waar we nu in leven, hebben enorme impact gehad op WORM. Desondanks is Janpier in deze context in staat geweest om niet zomaar mee te gaan met de tijd maar kritisch te blijven op processen van in- en uitsluiting. Ondanks de spanningen en uitdagingen laat Janpier niet alleen een instelling achter die financieel gezond is maar ook een sterk team dat vertrouwen heeft in de krachten van WORM. We gaan hem missen en wensen Janpier alle succes met zijn nieuwe uitdagingen.’

Janpier: ‘Het was een mooie, bijzondere tijd bij WORM. Ik zal de club enorm missen. WORM heeft een prachtig team mensen, met veel verschillende kwaliteiten. Door hen en door onze partners is WORM een organisatie geworden met een grote diversiteit aan producties en programma’s. Ik ben ze allemaal enorm dankbaar voor de samenwerking en de kans die ik van hen gekregen heb om er samen wat moois van te maken. Tegelijkertijd heb ik zin in de toekomst, de plannen voor de Cultuur&Campus spreken me erg aan, ik zie allemaal mogelijkheden’.

General manager Janpier Brands will leave WORM on November 1, 2022. He will represent Codarts and Willem de Kooning Academy (Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences) in the team that is bringing Bauhaus Cultuu&Campus to Rotterdam South.

Janpier Brands has been director of WORM since February 2017. Under his leadership, WORM developed into an open art organisation that is linked to numerous Rotterdam initiatives. Hundreds of productions are realised in WORM every year, based on WORM’s core interest in the ideas and potential of fellow human beings. These events attract tens of thousands of visitors. In addition, a large and sustainable international network has been developed where Rotterdam culture makers and artists circulate. WORM’s special way of working was recognised in 2021 with the accession to the Rijks Basis Infrastructuur.

The WORM Supervisory Board is proud of the developments that Janpier has realised in recent years. ‘We will miss Janpier enormously in WORM, at the same time we see that he is the one who contribute to CultuurCampus a vision of what the city, its inhabitants and the artists of the future need. Now, there is space in WORM available for the next generation to shape the future.’ This is completely in line with Janpier’s vision.’

Tina Rahimy, chair of the WORM Supervisory Board: ‘The challenges WORM faced in recent years were not small. The cultural and social changes in the city of Rotterdam and the years of restrictions for the cultural sector – due to Corona, but also due the turbulent time we live in now – have had a huge impact on WORM. Nevertheless, in this context Janpier has been able to not just keep up with the times, but to remain critical of processes of inclusion and exclusion. Despite the tensions and challenges, Janpier not only leaves behind a financially sound institution, but also a strong team that has faith in the powers of WORM. We will miss him and wish Janpier every success with his new challenges.’

Janpier: ‘It was a beautiful, special time at WORM. I will miss the club very much. WORM has a wonderful team of people, with many different qualities. Through them and through our partners, WORM has become an organisation with a great diversity of productions and programmes. I am very grateful to them all for the cooperation and the opportunity they gave me to make something beautiful together. At the same time, I’m looking forward to the future. The plans for the Cultuur&Campus really appeal to me, I see all kinds of possibilities.’
