📽️ We just received the good news that WORM Filmwerkplaats will be supported by Creative Europe Funding for its new international collaboration project SPECTRAL.
SPECTRAL: Spatial, Performative & Extended Cinematics – Transnational Research at Artist-run Labs
is a joint venture between WORM.Filmwerkplaats (NL), Baltic Analog Lab (LV), Crater Lab (ES), LaborBerlin (DE), Laia (PT) & Mire (FR), DIY organizations in the field of celluloid-based moving image. SPECTRAL will focus on the creation and circulation of Extended Cinematic Art (E.C.A.) and develop international collaboration to ensure the sustainability of this artform.
E.C.A. is multidisciplinary, built on the principle of expanding the traditional cinematic space, transforming the single screen and the passive audience through the use of photo-mechanical projection, performative practices, hybrid technologies and scientific research. Therefore, this practice is particularly well suited for the manifestation of shared, one of a kind aesthetic and bodily experiences. Although not as well-known as other moving image practices, E.C.A. has a rich history and a burgeoning present.
SPECTRAL aims to provide a solution for the lack of creation facilities and distribution options at a European level for E.C.A. The partners will open up their infrastructures to offer a unique artist-residency program aimed at supporting the creation of new works. In addition, artistic perspectives will be enabled through the development of new tools. Following a philosophy of transference between technology and art, these tools will upcycle obsolete or out of use industrial motion picture machinery. The consortium will commit to exhibiting the works produced through festivals, annual presentations and touring programs within their regional networks. To strengthen the community and its sustainability, SPECTRAL will provide several meeting points for networking and knowledge sharing by means of summer camps, workshops and a symposium. During 4 years, the project will produce 38 residencies, 30 showcases, 5 touring programs, 9 network events, 41 workshops, 1 E.C.A database and 1 printed publication.

SPECTRAL: Spatial, Performative & Extended Cinematics – Transnational Research at Artist-run Labs is een samenwerkingsverband tussen WORM.Filmwerkplaats (NL), Baltic Analog Lab (LV), Crater Lab (ES), LaborBerlin (DE), Laia (PT) & Mire (FR), doe-het-zelf organisaties op het gebied van bewegend beeld op celluloid. SPECTRAL zal zich richten op de creatie en circulatie van Extended Cinematic Art (E.C.A.) en het ontwikkelen van internationale samenwerking om de duurzaamheid van deze kunstvorm te waarborgen.
E.C.A. is multidisciplinair, gebaseerd op het principe van het uitbreiden van de traditionele cinematografische ruimte, het transformeren van een eenzijdig scherm en het passieve publiek door het gebruik van foto-mechanische projectie, performatieve praktijken, hybride technologieën en wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Daarom is deze praktijk bijzonder geschikt voor de manifestatie van gedeelde, eenmalige esthetische en lichamelijke ervaringen. Hoewel niet zo bekend als andere bewegende beeld praktijken, heeft E.C.A. een rijke geschiedenis en een opbloeiend heden.
SPECTRAL wil een oplossing bieden voor het gebrek aan creatie mogelijkheden en distributiemogelijkheden op Europees niveau voor E.C.A. De partners zullen hun infrastructuur openstellen om een uniek residentie programma voor kunstenaars aan te bieden, gericht op het ondersteunen van de creatie van nieuwe stukken. Bovendien zullen artistieke perspectieven mogelijk worden gemaakt door de ontwikkeling van nieuwe instrumenten. Volgens een filosofie van overdracht tussen technologie en kunst zullen deze instrumenten verouderde of onbruik geraakte industriële film machines upcyclen. Het consortium zal zich ertoe verbinden de geproduceerde werken tentoon te stellen via festivals, jaarlijkse presentaties en rondreizende programma’s binnen hun regionale netwerken. Om de gemeenschap en haar duurzaamheid te versterken, zal SPECTRAL verschillende ontmoetingsplaatsen bieden voor netwerken en het delen van kennis door middel van zomerkampen, workshops en een symposium. Gedurende 4 jaar zal het project 38 residenties, 30 showcases, 5 rondreizende programma’s, 9 netwerkevenementen, 41 workshops, 1 E.C.A database en 1 gedrukte publicatie produceren.
