Wolf and Dog (Lobo e Cão) speelt op São Miguel, het grootste eiland van de Azoren. Ana groeit op bij haar moeder en grootmoeder, in een gemeenschap waar geloof en traditie bepalen wat er van een meisje wordt verwacht. Haar beste vriend Luís trekt net zo graag een jurk aan als een broek en zoekt zijn eigen vorm van vrijheid. Als Ana’s vriendin Cloé uit Canada arriveert, begint voor Ana een eerste liefde en wordt ze geconfronteerd met de vraag wat ze nou echt met haar leven wil.
Varejão werkte met niet-professionele acteurs, gecast uit de bewoners van het eiland zelf, onder wie leden van de queer gemeenschap. De grens tussen fictie en documentaire vervaagt daardoor voortdurend.
De film won in 2022 de hoofdprijs van de Giornate degli Autori op het filmfestival van Venetië, en werd nog niet eerder in Nederland vertoond.

Around Rotterdam Pride we’re screening Wolf and Dog, the feature debut of Portuguese documentary maker Cláudia Varejão. A film with beautiful cinematography by Rui Xavier and an experimental edge, and a strong fit for WORM.
Wolf and Dog (Lobo e Cão) is set on São Miguel, the largest island of the Azores. Ana grows up with her mother and grandmother, in a community where faith and tradition decide what is expected of a girl. Her best friend Luís is as happy in a dress as in trousers and looks for his own kind of freedom. When Ana’s friend Cloé arrives from Canada, Ana falls in love for the first time and starts to ask what she really wants from her life.
Varejão worked with non-professional actors, cast from the island’s own residents, among them members of the local queer community. The line between fiction and documentary blurs throughout.
The film won the main prize of the Giornate degli Autori at the Venice Film Festival in 2022, and has not been shown in the Netherlands before.
