Sounding Here presents Nacht van de Componist

As part of Dag van de Componist, Sounding Here hosts a late-night programme at WORM in collaboration with New Music NOW. Expect a festival-in-an-evening with live electronics, audiovisual performances, and DJ sets—moving from concert into afterparty. Why not round off watching a day of concerts in Rotterdam by ending it all in WORM?

Sounding Here is an experimental performance series curated by Christine Cornwell and Otto Rissanen, bringing together music, electronics, and performance art in direct interaction with the audience. (Since its inception, Sounding Here has organised over 25 events across the Netherlands, connecting local and international artists through experimental, cross-disciplinary performances.)

Line up:

Doelen Ensemble – Happening
Using innovative concert formats, DoelenEnsemble strips contemporary music of its conventions and breaks down the barrier between stage and audience.
At NACHT van de Componist, musicians from DoelenEnsemble join Sounding Here for a collective Happening: performing graphic postcard scores by Rotterdam composers (Aart Strootman, Friso van Wijck, and Damaris), projected live during the event. The result is a playful, open performance where composition, improvisation, and audience participation meet.
DoelenEnsemble was founded in 1990 as the resident ensemble of de Doelen by former Doelen director Huub van Dael and composer Peter-Jan Wagemans. Its goal is to increase attention to twentieth-century repertoire and create a broader audience for modern composed music. Featuring (flute) Marieke Franssen and (bassoon) Anastasios Fotopoulos.

Lucija Gregov & Bernat Boronat + Otto Rissanen
The trio (electronics, cello, bass clarinet) premiere a new project inspired by the paintings of Kazimir Malevich and his 1910s art movement, Suprematism. Suprematism is grounded in the idea of presenting nothing representational, focusing instead on “pure artistic expression.”
They explore this approach by playing music that seeks to avoid references to specific aesthetics, genres, or even conventional tonalities.

Soon to Expire: Jorrit Westerhof & Austėja Zvirblytė
The Dutch/Lithuanian project Soon to Expire creates a sonic hauntology (the idea that elements from the social and cultural past return as a ghost) based on recordings from the 1920s. The typical crackle of outdated sound recording technologies hides in cheerful, usually danceable music, which the duo further manipulates to let the noise flood in. With their theatrical opera vocals, they create a distinctive form of cabaret full of fantastic revelations and dark hints.
