Op dinsdag 3 december nodigt WORM je uit voor een duik in een van de meest bizarre, verwarrende en onvergetelijke kerstfilms ooit gemaakt: de Mexicaanse cultklassieker uit 1959 Santa Claus vs. the Devil. In dit surrealistische spektakel neemt de kerstman het op tegen Pitch, een duivels figuur die naar de aarde is gestuurd om Kerstmis te saboteren en kinderen te verleiden tot het kwaad. Wat volgt is een technicolor-wervelwind van Koude Oorlog-moraal, fantastische snufjes en een verhaal dat alle logica tart.
Maar dit is niet zomaar kitsch om de kitsch. Voor de vertoning geeft filmwetenschapper Dani van Duin een korte introductie over de merkwaardige productiegeschiedenis van de film en de vele problematische elementen, waaronder racistische stereotypen van kinderen uit verschillende landen. We hebben ervoor gekozen deze film te vertonen, niet om zijn fouten te vieren, maar om ze onder ogen te zien. Door de aanstootgevende representaties te erkennen, willen we de ongemakkelijke waarheden uit het filmverleden herinneren en een betekenisvolle dialoog op gang brengen.

On December 3, WORM invites you to dive headfirst into one of the most bizarre, baffling, and unforgettable holiday films ever made: the 1959 Mexican cult classic Santa Claus vs. the Devil. This surreal spectacle pits jolly old Saint Nick against Pitch, a devilish imp sent to Earth to ruin Christmas and lead children astray. What follows is a technicolor whirlwind of Cold War morality, fantastical contraptions, and storytelling so strange it defies logic.
But this isn’t just kitsch for kitsch’s sake. Before the screening, scholar Dani van Duin will guide us through the film’s tangled production history and its many problematic elements—including its racist depictions of children from around the world. We’ve chosen to show this film not to celebrate its flaws, but to confront them head-on. By acknowledging its offensive portrayals, we aim to remember the uncomfortable truths of our cinematic past and spark meaningful conversation.
