Rotterdam Art Week: Interface / Day 2

Interface is a new programme strand within Rotterdam Art Week, focused on art that is not only viewed, but physically experienced. Rather than a conventional exhibition, it presents an immersive environment in which installations and objects continuously question the visitor’s position.
For this first edition, the organisation invited guest curator Hannah van der Elzen, who starts from a central question:

How do we relate to one another in a society where technology is constantly observing, measuring, and acting as an intermediary?

Interface examines how large-scale systems shape our daily lives, and how they can both create distance and enable connection. Many of these systems – often operating in the background – such as data flows, algorithms, security networks, and social codes, determine what we see, feel, share, and trust. Technology functions here as a tool for control, communication, and efficiency, yet the growing abundance of information makes it increasingly difficult to grasp an ever more complex network.

From cameras and surveillance systems that monitor our actions, to online subcultures where seductive imagery goes hand in hand with manipulation and steering; from new forms of interaction and connection to possible futures built on current developments, to the ‘natural’ structures that have always existed.

The installations and objects in Interface make these often invisible systems tangible and present. Abstract processes are translated into space, movement, and material, inviting visitors not only to understand these systems, but to experience them physically.
