This September, photographer Harmen Meinsma & WORM invite you to POSE! An extraordinary exhibition which blends clubbing, fashion and lens-based art.
During the 2020 lockdown, Harmen hosted multiple studio sessions with the new generation of club kids, a group of expressive characters and queens of the night. Harmen was inspired by this vibrant generation of youngsters from Rotterdam. He captured each personality in strong and richly expressive portraits. He removed the context of the club kids’ exterior environment and focused solely on the person in front of the camera. Zooming in on their unique beauty, the images are imbued with the heart of the underground and the spirit of the night. You will be immersed in this extraordinary energy when entering the exhibition, not to mention the special nights featuring performances by Cybersissy, Pxssypapi & Sukubratz. This series was made during Harmen’s residency at WORM, a magical world for today’s youth.
The exhibition is open from the 23rd September until the 10th of October. With thanks to CLASH.
ABOUT Harmen Meinsma:
For the first 20 years of his life, Harmen Meinsma lived with his grandmother in a small village in Friesland. During his teens, he felt like an outcast. His photography grew to be a positive space, where he could be himself. What started as building small decors in his grandma’s attic – where he photographed himself and friends – grew into a determination to give the underdog a pedestal.
Harmen is inspired by the people he comes across in real life. He amplifies what intrigues him through his lens. “In my work, I direct the spotlight to outcasts and the birds of paradise in this world and I turn them into icons.”
Harmen Meinsma received his BA (Hons) degree from the Willem de Kooning academy in 2017, specializing in fine art photography. His images have been exhibited in New York during Photoville and as of recently in the Kunsthal Rotterdam. Besides that, his images have been featured in magazines such as &C, FD Persoonlijk, Nouveau, Vogue NL and Volkskrant magazine.
