In deze Off Screen twee recente parels die dit jaar in premiere gingen op het IFFR; bubble bubble van Vincent Boy Kars & Rutger Nijkamp en The Liminal Zone van Rutger Wolfson. Natuurlijk zijn alle filmmakers aanwezig en worden ditmaal bevraagd door onder anderen Fé Baan. Van harte welkom!

Bubble bubble is zowel een documentaire als een uniek experiment over de ontwikkelen van kunst vanuit een minimale basisopstelling vanuit de vraag: wat gebeurt er als je kunstenaars uit dezelfde kunst discipline, maar met zeer verschillende achtergronden een aantal uur bij elkaar zet in een afgesloten ruimte?
Twee performancekunstenaars, twee musici en twee schilders: vormen, zonder elkaar ooit ontmoet te hebben en zonder voorbereiding, drie kunstenaarskoppels. Geplaatst in een ‘white cube gaan zij aan de slag, spelend met ideeën, tijd en elkaar, waarbij het levendig en creatief proces zichtbaar wordt.
Vincent Boy Kars heeft sinds zijn afstuderen aan de AKV St. Joost heeft naam gemaakt als documentairemaker die zich bezighoudt met identiteit, zelfbeeld en seksualiteit. Hij belicht deze thema’s vaak in de context van het digitale tijdperk. Kars wil het format van de documentaire uitdagen en ermee spelen, waarbij hij flirt met de grenzen tussen fictie en werkelijkheid.
Rutger Nijkamp studeerde in 2022 af aan de WdKa was cameo voor o.a. Mintfilm Regieassistent en conceptontwikkeling met filmmaker Vincent Boy Kars. Hij werkt hiernaast ook aan autonome projecten.
The Liminal Zone, Rutger Wolfson, 22’, 2026
The Liminal Zone volgt de existentiële reis van een man, gepijnigd door het visioen van een vrouw uit een vorig leven. Deze eerste zintuiglijke film van Rutger Wolfson neemt je mee naar een intrigerende futuristische schemerwereld waar realiteit en verbeelding niet te onderscheiden zijn, waarbij de fysieke en mentale toestand van de hoofdpersoon deel is van de bijna psychedelische setting. De korrelige zwart-witfilm, gefilmd door Richard van Oosterhout, de visuals van Telcosystems en de broeierige soundscapes van Hugo Dijkstal, maken het een film die onder je huid kruipt.
Rutger Wolfson heeft een achtergrond in de hedendaagse kunst; hij was curator bij Kunstinstituut Melly en later directeur van De Vleeshal. Van 2007 tot 2015 was hij directeur van het International Film Festival Rotterdam. Momenteel staat hij aan het hoofd van Debatpodium Arminius, een toonaangevend centrum voor publiek debat. The Liminal Zone (2026) is zijn debuut.

Bubble Bubble is both a documentary and a unique experiment exploring the creation of art from a minimalist starting point, based on the question: what happens when you bring together artists from the same artistic discipline but with very different backgrounds for a few hours in a closed space?
Two performance artists, two musicians, and two painters—without ever having met each other and without any preparation—form three artist duos. Placed in a “white cube,” they get to work, playing with ideas, time, and each other, revealing a lively and creative process.
Since graduating from the AKV St. Joost Academy, Vincent Boy Kars has made a name for himself as a documentary director who investigates identity, self-image and sexuality. He often examines these topics in the context of the digital age. Kars aims to challenge and play with the documentary film’s format, flirting with the borders between fiction and reality.
Rutger Nijkamp graduated from the WdKa in 2022 and has worked as an assistant director and concept developer at Mintfilm, among other places, alongside filmmaker Vincent Boy Kars. He also works on independent projects.
The Liminal Zone, Rutger Wolfson, 22’, 2026
The Liminal Zone follows the existential journey of a man tormented by the vision of a woman from a past life. This first sensory film by Rutger Wolfson takes you to an intriguing futuristic twilight world where reality and imagination are indistinguishable, with the protagonist’s physical and mental state forming part of the almost psychedelic setting. The grainy black-and-white cinematography by Richard van Oosterhout, the visuals by Telcosystems, and the sultry soundscapes by Hugo Dijkstal make this a film that gets under your skin.
Rutger Wolfson has a background in contemporary art, having served as a curator at Kunstinstituut Melly and later as director of De Vleeshal. From 2007 to 2015, he was the director of IFFR He currently heads Debatpodium Arminius, a leading center for public discourse. The Liminal Zone (2026) is his debut short film.
