MYANMAR DIARIES

// Fundraising screening for Myanmar earthquake relief
FIlm - Wed 4 June 2025
WORM Rotterdam
Start → 20:30
End → 22:30

Join us for an evening of solidarity as we screen two documentaries offering a glimpse into the heart of Myanmar’s ongoing struggle.

Since the military coup in 2021, Myanmar has been mired in civil war. On 28 March 2025, the country was struck by a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake, resulting in at least 5352 deaths and 11,400 injuries. Despite the devastating disaster, the military
junta has continued to carry out airstrikes in the aftermath. The people of Myanmar are facing unimaginable hardship.

Beyond the screenings, we will also have solidarity zines and handcrafted items for sale. All funds raised in this event, including the ticket sales, will directly go into grassroot organizations for earthquake relief efforts, providing essential aid to those affected by this double tragedy. Your attendance and contributions will make a tangible difference in the lives of those struggling to survive. Come, watch, learn, and stand in solidarity with the people of Myanmar during their darkest hour.

Myanmar diaries
by The Myanmar Film Collective
2022, 70mins, Myanmar, Netherlands and Norway, Burmese w/ English Subtitles

Myanmar Diaries is built up of short films by ten young anonymous Burmese filmmakers, combined with emotionally harrowing citizen journalism documenting the junta’s brutality, as well as courageous resistance to it. The film shows how Myanmar goes from the military coup to nation-wide protests and civil disobedience, to barbaric repression where thousands of peaceful protesters are imprisoned and murdered, to a growing popular armed revolt against this monstrous military junta. Moving organically back and forth between documentary and fiction, the film is a seamless whole in which the filmmakers find innovative creative ways to keep their protagonists anonymous.

Letter to San Zaw Htwe
by Petr Lom & Corinne Van Egeraat
2021, 15mins, Netherlands, Burmese and English w/ English Subtitles

Zaw Htway was an artist, activist, political prisoner and dear friend. He touched many lives, serving as a dedicated trauma counselor to former political prisoners. He spent 13 years — of a 36-year-sentence — imprisoned under harsh conditions. Until the end of his life, San Zaw Htway retained his gentle wisdom and joy. After the February 2021 military coup in Myanmar, a Burmese friend wrote to us asking, “What would San Zaw Htway have done in a time like this?”. And so the idea for this short documentary was born. We asked San Zaw Htway’s loved ones to write to him as an act of remembrance and a way of seeking solace and hope. This film is composed of their words, read by narrators to protect the identity of the writers, as some of them are Burmese activists involved in the resistance or in hiding.
