Michel Vay
by Nicholas Deschuyteneer and Patricia Gélise
2023, Belgium, 60mins, French w/ English subtitles
Tantalizing road movie set in the Belgian countryside: Michel, a disoriented security guard on the run, hijacks a ride to the airport. But nothing goes as planned. Time seems suspended, and his journey turns into a quiet, surreal drift through a collapsing world.
Shot on Super 16mm with minimal means and rich visual references—from Flemish Primitives to surrealist painting—the film blends realism with dream logic. Its soundtrack merges chanson, medieval choirs, and dub, echoing a world where music haunts the in-between spaces.
Is it a musical? Perhaps.
A haunting fable? For sure.
The screening will be followed by a concert by Wilf Plum and Nicolas Ekla, who composed the film’s soundtrack together.
Wilf Plum lived in Amsterdam for many years, where he was very active on the music scene as a musician and DJ- he was the drummer for the legendary Dog Faced Hermans, collaborated extensively with The Ex, is one of the two members of the punk duo Two Pin Din, was the unforgettable Stunt Elvis, played in West Hell Five, was DJ for the Amsterdam Beat Club….
Nicolas is the film’s co-director and also a musician. Together with Wilf and Cha!, they play in the trio LEM.
Their concert will attempt to retrace Michel Vay’s journey through music, revisiting the main themes of the film and the songs that punctuate it, which they will perform with percussion, analogue synthesizers, bass, echo chamber and vocals.
Cineville valid at the door and online the day of the screening. Make sure to arrive before the film starts to check in with Cineville!
