**IN RECURRENCE **
S/ASH GAERY
IN RECURRENCE brings together three recently graduated multidisciplinary artists based in Belgium and The Netherlands. From the sudden new environment after their graduation, they present some of their most recent works in Rotterdam. They invite you to WORM’s S/ash Gallery to soak in their mixed-media installations.
A common theme between the creatives is the subject of everyday, and how everydayness is perceived, traversed and captured. Our everyday surroundings- not only the buildings, crowds, and domains but also the rituals we adapt in bridging them and attempting to make sense of their aspects have a repetitive quality to them; a tautological effect that leaves both viewer and maker questioning the pattern at hand.
In an environment that has become increasingly streamlined, driven by economic interests and political motivation, what are moments that can truly be ours? IN RECURRENCE searches to question the detachment from systems that appear larger than ourselves, exploring spaces, memories and perceptions until a new-found comfort is discovered.
As the visitor enters the space they are invited into a quiet reflection on the effects of a postdigital urban society and the individual, lived experiences of everyday life.
Adriana Joëlle’s(1998, the Netherlands) practice is characterized by the use of various media: installation, video and sound, archival material, text and performance. Central to her work is the continuously shifting relationship between people, time and memory.
By exploring themes such as longing, loss, rituals, and repetition, she approaches her subjects as echoes from the past. In this way she reconstructs moments that are no longer physically present. By placing these elements in a new spatial and temporal context, she blurs the boundaries between past and present, presence and absence. Starting from her own lived experiences, but moving towards a collective memory, she strives to create space for reflection.
A space or moment in which to reconsider
what was,
what is,
and what may be.
Sam Janssen
My work delves into the digital realm, transforming it into sculptures and installations that blur the line between physical and virtual worlds. I reshape everyday objects, challenging perceptions of technology’s impact on our lives. My art prompts reflection on our evolving reality in a tech-driven world, aiming to spark conversations about our relationship with technology and its influence on us. Ultimately, I invite viewers to reconsider their place in a rapidly evolving technological landscape through my art.
Stijn van Casteren
Stijn van Casteren is a Dutch transdisciplinary artist based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. His current work revolves around repetition and the decay of perception. Coming from a background in painting and physical sound media he utilizes field recordings, tape loops and unstable electrical hums to attempt to explore the unheimlichkeit of urban environments and the sense of alienation as its primary echo, reflecting on the distant public spaces we inhabit during our daily lives.
