Fem Fest 2026: Grassroots Safer Spaces With Zahra Haji Fath Ali Tehrani (UK)

Zahra is a musician and director of Young Women’s Music Project (YWMP), an Oxford-based charity that provides a supportive space for young people. Zahra has pioneered a Safer Spaces policy in collaboration with young people, to disrupt the status quo of grassroots gig-going culture. The project stemmed from Zahra’s more than 20 years experience in the music industry, and has involved extensive research and national collaboration to cultivate a response to violence in music. This policy is now being successfully implemented in The Nest, YWMP’s new space in Oxford.
Expect:
* Screening of short film ‘What’s Left After The Wave Hits’, a portrait of Zahra.
* Presentation of YWMP’s Safer Spaces Policy and Procedures

Zahra is muzikant en directeur van Young Women’s Music Project (YWMP), een organisatie in Oxford die steun en ruimte biedt aan jongeren. Zahra heeft samen met deze doelgroep een Safer Spaces-strategie ontwikkeld die de heersende cultuur in de alternatieve live muziekscene probeert te doorbreken. Zahra kon daarbij terugvallen op meer dan 20 jaar eigen ervaring in de muziekindustrie, uitgebreid onderzoek, en samenwerking met andere pioniers verspreid in het VK. Het resultaat: een duidelijk weerwoord tegen geweld in de muziekwereld. Zahra’s Safer Spaces-strategie wordt momenteel met succes toegepast in The Nest, de nieuwe locatie van YWMP in Oxford.
