Global Super-8 Day 2025
Sunday 11th October
UBIK – WORM
11.30-15.30
On the 11th of October we will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of the iconic film size Super-8 (and Single-8 if you prefer the Japanese version). In a 4-hour program you can dive into the history of Super-8, with an array of old equipment to nowadays use!
Curated by Stichting Amateurfilm and long time Super-8 collector Ge Aarts. All will be present to answer your questions concerning this celebrated film format.
The UBIK space will be transformed into a multiplex cinema where you can see new and old Super-8 films. With new films made by members of the WORM Filmwerkplaats and other national and international artists. Amongst others there will be a Super-8 tryptic and Filmwerkplaats artist Carlijn Fransen made a stereo film with the very first 3D polarization system made for Super-8. Also on display will be original films featuring the anaglyph 3D (red/cyan) stereo system and anamorphic (cinemascope) Super-8 films.
There will be the possibility of handling your own (Super-8) films with the help of experts and a direct-animation try-out for which we will provide a variation of film materials, like transparent film to draw on and found footage to re-edit.
There will be a hands-on workshop Phytograpy on B&W double Super-8 print material; a direct animation technique where you use plant-based chemistry to develop an image. Plus a live workshop of film development by Rik Simon. All results will be projected on site!
If you have old (family) films on Super-8 (and Single-8) you want to see and know how to preserve, there are people present from Beeld & Geluid Institute to help and asses, whether it will be accepted into their database!
