Filmtuin: Tristana

Every Thursday evening in June 2025, and the first Thursday of July, the hidden garden Eendrachtstuin transforms into Filmtuin, our beloved yearly open-air cinema. From sundown, we’ll screen a mix of arthouse films, handpicked by neighbours and WORM’s film team.

Tristana

1970, Spain, 99mins, Spanish and French w/ English subtitles

The film follows the titular character, Tristana, who grieves for the loss of her mother while simultaneously balancing between her authoritarian guardian Don Lope and her lover Horacio. In doing so, Tristana represents both Madonna and the whore- a trope that is commonly found in female characters. Consequently, the film conducts an exploration of gender roles and cinematic female archetypes, as well as the nuances of femininity as a whole. Tristana can be seen as the predecessor of last year’s Parthenope (2024, directed by Paolo Sorrentino), as both films feature two young women navigating a patriarchal and morally ambiguous society.

This screening is selected by publicist, film curator, artist- and WORM’s neighbour- Ronald Glasbergen. Also observed from his curations for previous versions of Filmtuin, Ronald has a soft spot for cinema classics. And in many ways, Tristana is a canon movie for cinephiles, largely representing the style and tone of 70’s cinema.

Elke donderdagavond in juni 2025, en op de eerste donderdag van juli, verandert de verborgen tuin de Eendrachtstuin in de Filmtuin – onze jaarlijkse mini-openluchtbioscoop. Vanaf zonsondergang vertonen we een mix van arthouse films, zorgvuldig geselecteerd door buurtbewoners en het filmteam van WORM.

De film volgt het gelijknamige hoofdpersonage, Tristana, die rouwt om het verlies van haar moeder terwijl ze balanceert tussen haar autoritaire voogd Don Lope en haar minnaar Horacio. Tristana belichaamt daarmee zowel de Madonna als de hoer – een veelvoorkomende trope in vrouwelijke filmrollen. Zo onderzoekt Tristana genderrollen en vrouwelijke archetypes in de cinema, evenals de complexiteit van vrouwelijkheid in bredere zin. Tristana wordt ook gezien als een voorloper van het vorig jaar verschenen Parthenope (2024, geregisseerd door Paolo Sorrentino), waarin eveneens twee jonge vrouwen hun weg zoeken binnen een patriarchale en moreel dubbelzinnige samenleving.

Deze vertoning is geselecteerd door publicist, filmcurator, kunstenaar – en buur van WORM – Ronald Glasbergen. Zoals ook blijkt uit zijn eerdere bijdragen aan Filmtuin, heeft Ronald een zwak voor filmklassiekers. En in veel opzichten is Tristana een canonieke film voor cinefielen, die sterk het karakter en de sfeer van de cinema uit de jaren 70 vertegenwoordigt.
