Filmtuin: Little Man, Time and the Troubadour

Every Thursday evening in June 2025, and the first Thursday of July, the hidden garden Eendrachtstuin transforms into Filmtuin, our beloved yearly open-air cinema. From sundown, we’ll screen a mix of arthouse films, handpicked by neighbours and WORM’s film team.

Little Man, Time and the Troubadour

After the fall of USSR, Sipa Labakhua is forced to leave Soviet Georgia and seek refuge in Moscow. By weaving together his own personal narrative with the stories of people he has come across in his journey, he has composed a one-man marionette show. One can say that this is a form of intangible heritage as well as an artist’s coping mechanism. In that way, Little Man, Time and the Troubadour is about displacement as much as it is about home(land). Ever so relevant, the documentary poses one main question- what is a country?

This last screening of Filmtuin is curated by film-maker- and WORM’S neighbour- Ineke Smits, who has selected a work of her own. She is interested in finding and/ or composing manifestations of home, with her characters often struggling to fit in, caught between the past and the present, reality and fiction.

Elke donderdagavond in juni 2025, en op de eerste donderdag van juli, verandert de verborgen tuin de Eendrachtstuin in de Filmtuin – onze jaarlijkse mini-openluchtbioscoop. Vanaf zonsondergang vertonen we een mix van arthouse films, zorgvuldig geselecteerd door buurtbewoners en het filmteam van WORM.

Na de val van de Sovjet-Unie wordt Sipa Labakhua gedwongen Sovjet-Georgië te verlaten en zijn toevlucht te zoeken in Moskou. Door zijn persoonlijke verhaal te verweven met de verhalen van mensen die hij onderweg is tegengekomen, heeft hij een eenmans-marionettenvoorstelling gecreëerd. Je zou kunnen zeggen dat dit zowel een vorm van immaterieel erfgoed is als een manier van verwerken voor de kunstenaar. Little Man, Time and the Troubadour gaat dan ook net zoveel over ontheemding als over thuis(zijn). De documentaire stelt een uiterst actuele en fundamentele vraag: wat is een land?

Deze laatste vertoning van Filmtuin is gecureerd door filmmaker – en buur van WORM – Ineke Smits, die hier een eigen werk selecteerde. Haar interesse ligt bij het vinden of samenstellen van manifestaties van ‘thuis’, waarbij haar personages vaak moeite hebben om ergens bij te horen, gevangen tussen verleden en heden, tussen realiteit en fictie.
