Sax & Drums & Rock ‘n’ Roll

Englishman John Butcher and WORM go back a while, yes! We know him since the 90s and seen him collaborating with luminaries like Derek Bailey, Eddie Prévost, Steve Beresford, Okkyung Lee, John Tilbury, Christian Marclay, EX Orkest, Akio Suzuki, Keiji Haino, David Toop, Sophie Agnel, Fred Frith and Joe McPhee.
Norwegian drummer, percussionist and improviser Ståle Liavik Solberg knows Steve Beresford, Frode Gjerstad, Paal Nilssen-Love, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Lotte Anker, Lene Grenager and many more. When he isn’t touring he spends time teaching drums and also programming and organizing events like the Blow Out! series and the Kongsberg Jazzfestival.
Butcher and Liavik Solberg have, for eight years already, been developing their own brand of intimate duo music.

“The contrasts are clear and the twists surprising. The saxophonist covers the stretch between ongoing intensity and pure nudity. Butcher is concerned with the sound itself and he has total ownership of it. He snaps out phrases and utters notes and has a whole animal kingdom in the saxophones. He shares this touch with Liavik Solberg, who also explores sound production as a creative brand. The two mirror each other and fill the music with meaning through sharp communication. A painful expression from Butcher is softly received by Liavik Solberg’s relaxed cymbals. A rippling stream from the percussionist meets inside the saxophone. Then you can ask if the two say something new! The answer is yes, all the time.” * JAZZ i NORGE – Arild R. Andersen*

Social Housing Punker

Johana Molina is an interdisciplinary designer and performer. She is part of the RE#SISTER collective and is involved in musical projects such as the social-housing punk band Buurtbeheer and the experimental cumbia group Dooombieros. She is also a radio maker and co-creator of the film festival Cinema Colombiano.

Double Bass Bill

Gonçalo Almeida is a Portuguese musician and composer based in Rotterdam. With a strong interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to his work, Gonçalo plays in a variety of projects that go from modern jazz, freejazz, jazzcore and free improvisation music. Speaking of interdisciplinary.. Peter Jacquemyn, based in Vorst, Brussels, is a sculptor and graphic artist besides excelling on double bass. Really looking forward to have these 2 “giants of bass” on stage together, and with others!

About their common inspiration:
"For both Almeida and Jacquemyn, the music of Peter Kowald was of live-changing importance. ‘Was da ist’ Peter Kowald’s last solo cd, was a door opener for the way Gonçalo approached improvised music and the double bass from then on. Peter was already long time gone, he was lucky to have the privilege of a long and intense Peter Kowald live experience. Somehow Gonçalo and Peter speak the same language or maybe more precisely, they share a strong common ground."
