De Kuip 02 met Byinoar, Germ Lattice & Red Brut

This second night of De Kuip brings Germ Lattice, Red Brut and Byinoar to Rotterdam. Expect no wave from Norwich, cassette collages from Groningen and pastoral electronics from Dokkum. Plus the unexpected, of course.

The sun is shining, festival season has started so it’s time for the second night of De Kuip.

First on the bill is Byinoar. What do you get if you put one third of the Homesick, a quarter of Korfbal, one fifth of Yuko Yuko, one third of Milojkovic Trio, one third of Klein Europa, a quarter of Milojkovic Quartet and one fourth of Real Farmer in one space with some recording devices, loop pedals and minimal synths? Seeing is believing and we’re going to hear the answer tonight in WORM. Jaap, as Byinoar is called in daily life, makes pastoral electronics; it’s like a live remix of a church ceremony, done by Animal Collective. No record is out yet, so you can say to everyone in the future that you saw this jewel before he got famous.

Talking about famous: next up is Red Brut. Marijn, who is Red Brut, was for years a big part of the scene in Rotterdam. She was co organiser of MiMa and Herman concert nights, and played in bands like Sweat Tongue, Stalkre and Goldblum. Here in Rotterdam she also started a solo act called Red Brut, a poetic act where a collection of cassette tapes are (live!) edited together as one big collage. On the tape are diverse sounds, from field recordings to self played electronics. In the past Red Brut released records at quality labels like Kraak, Chocolate Monk and Lal Lal Lal. At the end of last year, she released her third full length LP, On Bare Ground, on labels Coherent States, Dead Mind Records and Encore. On Bare Ground, Red Brut is celebrating a moving to the Dutch city Groningen, with sound only recorded in Rotterdam. After a succesful tour through the UK and a show on Rewire Festival, Marijn is back in her old city to present this record in the city of "niet lullen maar poetsen".

After two solo acts is time for a bit more dynamics on stage. On this second night of De Kuip, Germ Lattice will present this for you, the audience. This enigmatic trio makes no wave like in New York in the 80’s, but combined with a minimalistic United Kingdom approach. Think: Mosquitos, Metabolist and Dome. On the debut LP Gipping Through the Ages, released by the London quality label Horn of Plenty (Nein Rodere, Annelies Monseré, Warm Currency), you can hear how the trio formed an own musical dimension. Word on the street that it’s live a bit more intense, so be a witness of the first tour of Germ Lattice in Europe tonight at WORM.

Het zonnetje schijnt, het festivalseizoen is in volle bloei en dus is het tijd voor de tweede avond van De Kuip.

Als eerste speelt Byinoar. Wat krijg je als je een derde van the Homesick, een kwart van Korfbal, een vijfde van Yuko Yuko, een derde van Milojkovic Trio, een derde van Klein Europa, een kwart van Milojkovic Kwartet en een vierde van Real Farmer in één ruimte zet met slechts wat opnameapparatuur, looppedalen en spaarzame synths? De vraag stellen is hem beantwoorden, en vanavond gaan we het antwoord horen in de WORM. Jaap, zoals Byinoar in het dagelijks leven heet, maakt pastorale elektronica, alsof Animal Collective een kerkelijke mis live aan het (re)mixen is. Er wordt gewerkt aan een plaat waarin meerdere labels reeds interesse hebben getoond, dus kom dit nu nog verborgen pareltje in zijn beginstadium ontdekken.

Byinoar vormt een mooi opstapje naar Red Brut. Marijn, zoals Red Brut in het dagelijks leven heet, was jarenlang vlaggendrager van ‘een bepaalde scene’ in Rotterdam; ze was medeorganisator van MiMa- en Herman-avonden en speelde in bands als Sweat Tongue, Stalkre en Goldblum. Sinds een aantal jaar opereert ze met succes solo; Red Brut is een poëtische act waarbij live diverse cassettes aan en door elkaar worden gemixt. Op de tapes staan geluiden variërend van field recordings tot zelf opgenomen elektronica. Reeds verschenen er geluidsdragers op vooraanstaande vooruitstrevende labels als Kraak, Chocolate Monk en Lal Lal Lal, en eind vorig jaar kwam daar de derde LP, On Bare Ground, bij, uitgebracht op de labels Coherent States, Dead Mind Records en Econore. Op On Bare Ground viert Red Brut, met in Rotterdam opgenomen geluiden, een verhuizing naar Groningen. Na een tour door het VK en wat mooie festivalshows (oa Rewire), is Marijn terug in Rotterdam om de plaat voor te stellen aan haar oude bekenden in deze “niet lullen maar poetsen”-stad.

Na twee solo-acts is het tijd voor wat meer dynamiek op het podium. Dat wordt op deze tweede De Kuip-avond verzorgd door Germ Lattice. Dit enigmatische Engelse trio maakt no wave zoals ze dat ook in de jaren 80 in New York maakten, maar dan met een minimalistisch Verenigd Koninkrijk-sausje eroverheen. Denk: Mosquitos, Metabolist, Dome. Hoe dat klinkt is te horen op debuut-LP Gipping Through the Ages die vorig jaar uitkwam op het Londense kwaliteitslabel Horn of Plenty (Nein Rodere, Annelies Monseré, Warm Currency) en hoge ogen gooide op diverse jaarlijsten. Live schijnen de drie heren er nog een schepje bovenop te doen, dus meemaken is geloven tijdens de eerste Europese tour van Germ Lattice, die op de 24e mei langs de Boomgaardstraat voert.
