13 Ensemble with Ester F. Mata

13 Ensemble presents their debut album, Traffic Is the New Silence (Honolulu Records, 2026), inviting audiences into a world of contemporary jazz, conducted improvisation, cinematic textures, and echoes of contemporary music.
Led by composer, performer, and conductor Ester F. Mata, the 13-member collective brings together 5 horns, a string quartet, vibraphone/double bass/drums as rhythm section, and electronics in a sound world where structure and spontaneity coexist.
Ester’s compositions function as open frameworks in which musicians shape the music in real time through listening, interaction, and collective decision-making. Electronics (spoken word and everyday sounds) become part of an evolving musical language that moves between the written and the intuitive. The result is music in constant motion, where tension, fragility, and transformation take shape.
