Longread: Essays on Marion Scemama and Ivana Mladenović

We are excited to share with you two newly commissioned essays, written for the occasion of Field Recordings 6, by authors Kari Robertson and Nick Thomas! The texts are devoted to the work of Marion Scemama and Ivana Mladenović, the filmmakers in focus and guests of Field Recordings 6.

In Notes on Relation and Resonance: Marion Scemama and David Wojnarowicz, Kari Robertson explores the complexity of a relationship built on mutual care and “an unyielding openness to what the world is and could be”, linking the lived realities of Scemama and Wojnarowicz with the contemporary moment. In Noble Ambition: Three Early Shorts by Ivana Mladenović, Nick Thomas analyses the dynamic between Mladenović and her protagonists, as well as her own conflicted relationship with documentary filmmaking and ethics, while placing Mladenović’s work within the broader context of the Romanian New Wave.
