Often seen behind the mixing desk during live gigs at WORM, Vincent Denieul rifles through his harddrives and unearths some favourite recordings from the many concerts he’s recorded here over the years. The recordings are mastered and condensed into (nearly) 25-minute selections that give an idea of what it’s like to experience a live show at WORM.
First up is a brilliant Secret Chiefs 3 show from November 2012. Support was a.P.A.t.T from Bristol (UK). Secret Chiefs 3 line up that night was: Trey Spruance (Mr. Bungle / Faith No More): guitar, saz | Timba Harris (Estradasphere): violin, viola, guitar, trumpet | Toby Driver (Kayo Dot): bass | Kenny Grohowski (John Zorn): drums, percussion | Matt Lebofsky: keyboards, samples | Olivia Oyama: Sound.
Ein Abend in WORM was a long-running collaboration with the much-missed Goethe Instituut in Rotterdam. The headliner for this edition, Chris Imler, had worked with various musicians (Peaches, Puppetmastaz, Driver & Driver, etc.) and, at this time, had just released his solo debut ‘Nervös’, a great, fun pop record. More madness on the night came courtesy of the “ultimate Hamburg scene insider tip”, Holger Steen; a two metre tall man dressed up as a tulip, who combined classic singing techniques and accounts of his personal life: a WORM favourite! Germany’s weirdest hiphop duo, Hallo Werner Clan (aka Benni Bo and Miss Hawaii (the Tokyo-to-Hamburg expat)) also played to startled punters.
WORM friend Mabe Fratti returned to play with Hector Tosta Friso van Wijck and Jarett Gilgore after a two year-hiatus for a blistering live show. (Mabe loves WORM and was once caught moshing to a Tramhaus show here, rock on!) The night was part hosted by Amsterdam-based improv and jazz organisation Space is the Place, WORM, and North Sea Round Town. The night was packed with great players; Sanem Kalfa, Jorritt Westerhoff and Andy Moor amongst many.
