RADIO VOICEMAIL 2012-2017

Radio Voicemail was a project that was about creating a new platform out of an obsolete medium, working with voicemail as abandoned digital space. Radio Voicemail began in 2012, initiated by Floris Visser. Radio Voicemail was is a show of two minutes length, (sometimes recorded at WORM Sound Studios) and broadcast weekly through a cell phone’s voicemail. Each broadcast features a jingle, an introduction and a collage of sounds, speech or a performance from a collection of artists under the direction of Visser.

The old number (for posterity) was 0031 (0) 6-1973 60 48.  Each year of the project, around 20 artists were asked to contribute.

The contributor list is a long one, with names such as Radboud Mens, Anouk Visee, Helmut Smits, Dennis de Bel, Rosa Peters, Abner Preis, Frans van Lent, Amy Suo Wu, Cancernoise and Visser himself.

WORM Façade + SIM card
A new show was broadcast each week. To advertise the shows, Visser installed a concrete plaque on the outer façade of WORM with the names and broadcast dates of the artists involved engraved in it. Once a new show was broadcast, the contributor’s name was scratched out by a WORM employee. Previous Radio Voicemail were released on a (now obsolete) SIM card by WORM, which held a pre-installed phone number and enough credit to listen to every show once more.

Radio Voicemail is een wekelijks radio programma van 2 minuten, uitgezonden via de voicemail van het nummer 0031(0)6-1973 60 48. Het bevat een jingle, een introductie en een collage van geluiden, tekst of performances waarvoor ieder jaar 20 kunstenaars wordt gevraagd om werk te maken. Zo is geleidelijk een nieuw platform ontstaan uit een inefficiënt medium waarin de voicemail hergebruikt wordt als verlaten digitale ruimte.

Iedere woensdag is er een nieuwe uitzending wie een week lang te beluisteren is en om dit kenbaar te maken hangt er een betonnen gevelsteen aan de muur van verschillende kunstinstellingen, met de namen en uitzenddata van de kunstenaars erin gegraveerd. Zodra er een nieuwe uitzending is wordt de voorgaande naam doorgeslepen door een medewerker van het instituut. Dit jaar zijn dat WORM (Rotterdam), Extrapool (Nijmegen), De Fabriek (Eindhoven), OT301 (Amsterdam), W139 (Amsterdam).

In 2018 the full archive was reissued, using a new telephone number, which allows for navigation through the all episodes. This telephone number, the artists names and instructions are engraved in Resopal, which functions as a final publication of the project.
