Cultfilm: Alex Diehl

The Cultfilm programme has its origins in the ‘Cultvideotheek’, ‘Next Page’, which was part of ‘Foundation IDFX’ in Breda. With the death of movie rentals and the disappearance of the conventional video stores, Cultfilm decided to up sticks to WORM, and recreated the concept of DVD and video rentals through the form of (specialised) public events.

Cultfilm focusses on the meaning of the term ‘cult film’ in its broadest sense. Namely: cult, trash, stroma, weird horror, giallo’s, out of date sci-fi, exploitation, eroticism, low-budget, or underground productions from out-of-the-way countries. In short: a motley collection of films with a certain ‘cult’ cache surrounding them; or films that can be classified as cult films as opposed to what passes for a ‘high art’ film.

The first film we screened at WORM was BARABARELLA. We also look to explain our approach using documentaries, “makings-of” films (as in our mini-series, “THE BEST WORST MOVIE”) and through inviting guests or filmmakers, such as Willem van Batenburg the maker of PLUM BLOSSOM. We use a variety of media: such as VHS, DVD, blu-ray, 16mm and 35mm.

In collaboration with other programmers at Filmhaus WORM, we look to contribute to the diversity of film as a medium; whether through historical, societal, or thematic considerations, unhindered by ‘common or garden’ definitions of quality; or genre conventions. Cultfilm looks to enrich Rotterdam’s film programme in general, screening titles that are not seen elsewhere.

Alex Diehl has owned a video store for fifteen years. Here, his love for and knowledge of cult films was fostered. He contributed to FILMHUIS MOVIEW in Wageningen as a volunteer in the nineties and is also one of the regular programmers at BUT Film Festival (B-movies, Underground & Trash) in Breda; he was involved right from the beginnings, in fact. Every month, he organises a screening of cult films at WORM (a night which began back in 2010). Alex is backed up by the remains of his own cult video store’s stock, and group of aficionados and friends.
