RAFAEL TORAL (PT) + LAURA AGNUSDEI (IT)
Formerly known for his work with guitar and electronics and acclaimed records such as Wave Field (1994) or Violence of Discovery and Calm of Acceptance (2000), he radically renewed his approach to music in 2004, working with custom electronic instruments. Rafael Toral now applies a jazz discipline and working practices to his abstract electronics. The result is a music full of paradoxes: melodic without notes, rhythmic without a beat, familiar but strange, meticulous but radically free. His music was once described as “a brand of electronic music far more visceral and emotive than that of his cerebral peers”.
Laura Agnusdei is a classically trained saxophone player from Bologna, currently based in The Hague, where she is studying at the Institute of Sonology. Her electroacoustic compositions feature the saxophone as the main voice within sonic landscapes that shift between melodies and textures. The song forms fuse acoustic, digital and analogue sound sources to create transient emotional states. In September 2017 her debut solo Night/Lights was released via UK-based cassette label The Tapeworm. Agnusdei also plays as the saxophonist of italian psych-rock band Julie’s Haircut (Rocket Recordings).
