PANTROPICAL: Tabanka + Celeste/Mariposa + Nadia Rodrigues + Klapsalon
IMPORTANT: We’re sad to report that mister Zé Lino, singer and lead guitarist of Conjunto Contratempo, who were announced for this event earlier, suffered a sudden and unforseen illness two days ago (July 18). We wish mister Lino a full and speedy recovery. Conjunto Contratempo obviously had to cancel their shows in Bruxelles and Rotterdam. However, we’ve decided to go ahead with the night. The rest of the programme will take place as scheduled, and we’ve found Tabanka ready to step in as the live band.
Tabanka are stepping in to replace Conjunto Contratempo as the live band this evening. The popular Cape Verdean band from Rotterdam knows how to put on an exuberant show with their fresh and contemporary take on Funaná, inspired by Code di Dona, Bulimundo, Américo Brito and, of course Bitori. Funaná is the energetic music and dance style, once forbidden by Portuguese colonial rulers, which became part of post-independence Cape Verdean identity in the eighties. Funaná is derived from the music from the descendants of slaves, mixed with contemporary pop and jazz. The base of the funaná are the diatonic accordion (gaita) and the rasping sound of the ferrinho, a notched metal bar played as a Caribbean guiro.
[ CANCELLED! ] CONJUNTO CONTRATEMPO (cv)
Formed in 1980 in Lisbon, Conjuncto Contratempo plays a crossover called FunaCola, a combination of Cape Verdean Funaná and Coladeira; moreover that has never been heard before in WORM. In the eighties they famously played live sets of up to five hours in the clubs of Lisbon’s periphery, the quarters where migrants of the Portuguese colonies lived. Conjunto Contratempo will recreate that same classic party atmosphere again, at this show. Their albums “Terezinha” (1982), “Tchico Tchicote” (1986) and “Menina Fiteira” (1990), are well sought after by many collectors around the world. The band played around Europe, but never in their homeland Cape Verde, or elsewhere in Africa. The last time the core members shared the same stage was in Montreux, Switzerland, in 1994.
Lisbon-based DJ Celeste/Mariposa is a welcome guest in Rotterdam, and someone who has played many parties since the Pantropical show with Chalo Correia in May 2015. Celeste/Mariposa started in 2009 focussing exclusively on Lusophone African Music from the 60s until today. He tirelessly supports and releases contemporary Luso-African bands from the Lisbon area. Wilson Vilares sets dancefloors ablaze with the most awesome record collections from the 5 ex-Portuguese colonies in Africa; Angola, Cabo Verde, Guiné-Bissau, Mozambique, and São Tomé & Príncipe!
Nadia Rodrigues (CV)
Nadia is a DJ who played in the Rotterdam Afro scene for six years. She is a DJ on the rise who switches back and forth effortlessly between styles like kuduro, azonto, baile funk, soukous, funana, afro house, and coladeira.
Klapsalon (FR / NL / Anadolu Ekspres)
Klapsalon is mostly known for his fine Turko-Dutch event series with Anadolu Ekspres, co-organised by Haylayf, but he is also a fine selector of Cabo, Zouk, Funana, Batuco, Soukous, and other styles.
