Ether Snuiven: Musicity Presents ‘Rotterdam’ + BMBCon (w Justin Bennet) + Wabbesch
Musicity is the project created by Nick Luscombe (BBC Radio 3 programme, ‘Late Junction’). Musicity Rotterdam draws from Nick’s previous work and will be a collaboration with Steve Hellier (ex-Death in Vegas, founder member). Musicity seeks to encourage people to explore the city musically, architecturally and experientially by commissioning musicians to compose original tracks in response to a building, site or piece of the city that inspires them.
The latest in a series of audio-visual works on the theme of shipping containers, London-based collaborative duo Nick Luscombe and Steve Hellier present a new commission made in response to the world-famous Port of Rotterdam. Uniform and efficient, containers are symbols of globalisation, traversing land and sea in vast numbers. Yet they also epitomise faceless transactions in a world where technology has increasingly displaced human labour. Drawing on industrial music from the 1980s itself the product of an era of economic shifts Luscombe and Hellier have recorded percussive encounters with these ubiquitous steel units. Using high sample-rate recordings, they reveal sonically hidden stories from Rotterdam’s huge container port: capturing the ghosts of their contents and journeys, with each vessel resonating differently depending on its (unidentified) load.
Premiered as a performance at WORM, with live electronic manipulation by Luscombe and Hellier, the overall effect is a haunting, immersive sonic experience, which leaves listeners reflecting on 21st-century displacement and the unending trafficking of goods and people around the world.
Steve Hellier attended Goldsmiths in the late 80s where he studied fine art surrounded by the future Young British Artists. He met Richard Fearless and formed Death in Vegas writing, recording and touring their first album ‘Dead Elvis’ which gained commercial and critical success. Hellier has made a number of works in sound and video including piece for the RA, Tallinn Music Week and the Museum of London, and Musicity Seoul. He has been working with Mark Leckey (turner prize winner 2008) on his recent film Dream English Kid the film has recently won at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in the short films category.
Nick Luscombe is a British radio DJ, having presented various self-selected new music shows since 1999 for the likes of XFM, BBC 6 Music, BBC World Service, Tokyo FM, Inter FM, NME Radio, Samurai FM and Resonance FM. His Flomotion radio show has been broadcast every week on FM radio since 2000 hosted on mixcloud since 2013. He has presented BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction programme since 2010. Luscombe has worked at London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts as Director of Music, at the BBC as a radio producer and at iTunes where he oversaw the editorial for all of Apple’s Pan European music stores. BMBCon (with Justin Bennet)
BMB Con is a longstanding performance group working with sound, image, and whatever else they get their hands on. On this particular event they will focus on our fave theme; the Ether. It will be a short but intense performance. BMB con. was formed in 1989 by Justin Bennett, Wikke ‘t Hooft and Roelf Toxopeus and acted mostly as a fixed trio. Since 2006 BMB con. is a collaboration between the BMB con. core duo and various individuals and groups depending on the occasion.
