Festival Magia Day 1

Arp Frique presents Festival Magia is back for its third edition on August 23rd and 24th in downtown Rotterdam: the area around the infamous Witte de Withstraat! Surrounded by lively bars and restaurants in the middle of Rotterdam’s art district, Festival Magia presents 2 days and nights filled with international music both outdoors and indoors in galleries, musea and clubs, and it’s free of charge (with the exception of Magia By Night and the screenings at Kino)! Live performances, DJs, movie screenings, art, live radio, a talk show and a vinyl market, plus 2 sweaty nights in Rotterdam’s finest clubs. The lineup includes South African legend and celebrity Penny Penny also known as the “Shangaan Disco King”, another South African the beloved bubblegum-star Ntombi Ndaba & Esa’s Afro-Synth Band debuting their live show in Holland, the first female Japanese folk artist Sachiko Kanenobu performing her 1972 debutalbum “Misora”, a rare performance by Ethiopian artist Sosena Gebre Eyesus on the near-extinct King David’s harp, Cape Verdean funana heroes Pilon, Danny Carvalho and Nando da Cruz and an experimental performance by Surinam flute legend Ronald Snijders x Dennis Verschoor, the Rotterdam based sound wizard known for his use of analog broadcasting gear and other types of curious tone generators. Some DJ power?Orpheu The Wizard, Digital Zandoli, Mari, Satoshi Yamamura, Sekan, Bonnefooi, Rita Maia and many more are there for the blockparty and at night we will continue indoors in Worm and Mono for Magia By Night. Together with our partners Tent and Witte de With Centre For Contemporary Arts we present the art program, including a must-see retrospective exhibition of Chilean artist/activist/poet Cecilia Vicuna. At Kino and Worm, expect 3 hand-selected screenings including the premiere of the restoration of Babylon (1982), a hardknocking movie about the rough Jamaican side of London filled with reggae music and celebrity appearances. The vinyl market will be expanding this year, including a popup version of Amsterdam’s Rush Hour Store. And to dig a little deeper, Operator Radio will host 2 days of live radio and a talk show with a selection of the artists of the festival, taking place at gallery Mama. For more info, visit .
