Night Tripper #1: DUDS (UK) + SWEAT TONGUE (NL) + CRASH TOTO (BE) + CARRAGEENAN (BE)
The Avantgardistic State also enjoys confrontation. On this night we encounter this element in four acts who make a shaking shuddering noises of an avant-garde manner.
Hailing from Manchester DUDS are a tight, self-contained four-piece who combine sharp bursts of rhythmical energy with intelligent musicianship. Their lyrics comment on the human condition and arbitrary, sometimes strange scenarios or themes. The band has somehow managed to knock out three EPs in a year; “NLP” and “Unfit for Work” and lastly, “Wet Reduction”, which was recorded at Manchester’s celebrated Kraak Gallery. Stylistically, think James Chance and Beefheart, with a dash of post-punk thrown in.
Sweat Tongue is a Rotterdam trio comprising of Marijn Verbiesen, Michiel Klein and Bébé Beliz. They resort to thrashing outdemented riffs that ignore the phenomenon of harmony, and throw in a large dollop of abject insanity on vocals for good measure. There are some funky drums, too.
A mysterious, brazen and often confrontational Brussels outfit with members of Lemones, Carrageenan and Christophe Clébard playing free-noise music. Further to that, WORM knows little. We do know that some of their members – as Lemones – burned a strange neon and slightly lurid hole in the roof last time they played here.
Expect hard dystopian techno from the Brussels-based underground star Matthieu Levet. He formed the band Pizza Noise Mafia with fellow Brussels underground scenster, TG.
