Cancelled / Afgelast – Extra Extra Non-Fictie Schrijfworkshop #1

Mapping the Body door Mia You
10:00
WORM

ENGLISH
This workshop has a thematic focus on sensual non-fiction writing about travel, inspired by the Extra Reading feature in Extra Extra Magazine #14, which focuses on books about travel. Writing is like travelling: the – fully Covid-proof – Extra Extra Workshop enables you to develop your non-fiction writing skills, guided by writers and thinkers from the fields of design and literature.

In the workshop ‘Mapping the Body’ on Monday morning, the participants are guided by academic/writer Mia You. The record of travelling, moving yourself and leaving behind what you know, is conveyed through language. The effects of physical transmissions – from kissing to breathing – that take place between the people we met in the places we travelled to, are the subject of this workshop. Mia You guides you to use elements such as tone, mood and description to further develop your own voice within non-fiction writing.
Following the workshop, two online masterclasses by editor-in-chief of The Happy Reader Seb Emina and writer Kevin Breathnach will be streamed at the location from 14:00 – 17:15. Both the workshop and masterclasses are in English.

Next to tickets for the individual workshops, a limited number of passe partout tickets for the three Extra Extra workshops and the masterclasses are available.

Twee masterclasses door Seb Emina en door Kevin Breathnach

14:00 – 16:15

Seb Emina
Given the current situation where travel is barely possible in the short term and ethically loaded in the long term, one can question the meaning of the genre of travel writing. With reference to the work of writers including Georges Perec, Olga Tokarczuk and Deborah Levy, as well as work published in The Happy Reader, Seb discusses how techniques of ‘travel writing’ in fact offer, more than ever, an important way of engaging with the world as a writer.

Kevin Breathnach
One of the most exciting non-fiction writers to emerge in recent years, Kevin Breathnach speaks in travelling tongues. Exploring an innovative non-fiction writing methodology, critical theorisation by T.S. Elliot and Rosalind Krause, among others, play an unsettling and key role. In this masterclass, Kevin shares ways in which writers might escape their own language – its grammar, syntax, even vocabulary – so as to write it anew, with no apparent sense nor subject. Be ready to let your tongue travel. Be inspired by a variety of estrangement from language; from Hildegard von Bingen’s mystical Lingua Ignota to Raymond Roussel’s proto-mechanical procés.
